Chicken Rights. Farming Wrongs.

Each year in Australia, 470 million meat or "broiler" chickens are raised contributing to a $3.5 billion dollar industry. Approximately 96% of these chickens are raised in intensive conventional farming systems.

In conventional farms, up to 60,000 chickens genetically selected to rapidly gain weight are housed in barren sheds, cramped conditions and dim lighting. This environment does not allow the birds to enjoy fresh air, display normal behaviours, and can lead to serious health problems.

The chicken meat industry is regulated by the Codes of Practice adopted under the Queensland Government Animal Care and Protection Act 2001, and these codes allow these inhumane practices to continue.

RSPCA Qld wants to see the codes changed to better protect chickens. To this end, RSPCA Qld has launched its "Chicken Rights. Farming Wrongs" campaign with the dual purpose to decrease the demand for conventionally farmed meat through "consumer power" and to urge the government to review the codes. "Chicken Rights. Farming Wrongs" is a vital first step forward to improve the welfare of meat chickens in Queensland. Today, you can take your first step by: becoming more informed about the animal welfare concerns associated with conventional farming; by participating in RSPCA Qld's 35 day "Right Choice" challenge or by donating towards our vital campaign and investigative work.

Today, you can support RSPCA Qld's campaign for "Chicken Rights" not "Farming Wrongs".
