The "Right Choice" Challenge
Why take the challenge?
Consumers are a powerful voice of change. This is evidenced by supermarket's expansion of free-range egg options here in Australia and an increase in consumer's decision to purchase free-range or certified organic chicken in the United Kingdom leading to a global change in supermarkets decision to expand higher animal welfare options. This demand-led revolution is beginning to take effect in Australia but it requires a committed change in purchasing behaviours by Australian consumers, by us.
Industry will continue to conventionally farm meat chickens as long as consumers demand it. By choosing accredited free-range or certified organic chicken labelled with any of the labels listed below for a period of 35 days you will do your part to help decrease the consumer demand for conventionally farmed chicken, thereby helping to reduce the need for this inhumane practice to continue.
Sure, you're one person but if you and those around you accept this challenge, economies of scale would not only show a decrease in the supply for conventionally farmed chicken, but eventually, a decrease in price as well. Between these two reasons - what are you waiting for? Take the 35 day "Right Choice" Challenge and support RSPCA Qld's campaign for "chicken rights" not "farming wrongs".
What's with the 35 days?
Changing behaviour is difficult and many of us don't have the motivation, even it means benefiting our health. Yet experts agree that behaviour can be broken if it's maintained for a period of 21 days. With the motivation to help end the inhumane treatment of conventionally farmed chickens, RSPCA Qld challenges you to choose accredited free-range or certified organic chicken for 35 days, the symbolic life of a meat chicken at the age of slaughter. When, and if free-range or certified organic chicken is not available, we ask you to choose an alternative humanely produced meat or a non-animal alternative.
Rules & tips for the challenge
- Choose accredited free range or certified organic chicken. You can find a list of the labels to look out for here.
- If you know about outlets that supply accredited free-range or certified organic chicken, please, fill in this form with the details of your humane chicken "Right Choice" find!
- Register your 35 days of commitment. Once registered you will receive regular updates, messages of support and upon completion of the 35 days, your certificate of participation.
- Make a commitment to yourself and to the millions of meat chickens whom your challenge will spare that you will stick to the challenge no matter how tempting that meal deal!
And finally! Remember that chickens labelled 'barn-fresh', 'grain fed', 'hormone free' and '100% natural' are likely to be sourced from conventional farms. Look out for these as well as clever marketing techniques such as confusing images and ambiguous language that encourage consumers to dissociate animals from food.
“People say that "they" will do something about it. Who are "they"? It starts with us.”
